The Township of Derry is planning to apply for twenty free trees through the Tree Pennsylvania 2023 Spring Bareroot tree planting program.   The Township would like to make these free trees available to homeowners in Derry Township for planting along the streets within the public right-of-way.  If successful, the Township would expect these trees to be delivered around the end of March or the beginning of April 2023. These trees are various species of 1 ½ inch caliper size—about 8-12 feet tall.

If you are a homeowner in Derry Township and would like a free tree planted along the street at your house, please contact Marisa Weldon, Public Works Department, at 717-533-2057, option 4Please call on or before January 27th, 2023.  If more than twenty homeowners express interest, selections will be made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Because these are free trees, there is a limit of one tree per homeowner.  The exact location of the trees will have to be approved by the Township and a PA tree forester.  When the trees are delivered to the Township, the Township will dig the holes for the trees.  The trees will be planted by volunteers from the Derry Environmental Action Committee (DEAC).  At the time of planting, the trees will be watered by the DEAC volunteers. After planting, the homeowner will be fully responsible for tree maintenance including, weekly watering, mulching, pruning, and protecting the tree from damage.
