Stormwater Management Projects Update

Deer Run Stream and Bullfrog Valley Stream Restoration Projects

Construction activities continue for this Chesapeake Bay Pollutant Reduction Plan and Stream Restoration project.  The majority of the work is expected to be completed in early May, with minor restoration work to remain thereafter.

Multiple contractor crews are staged at various locations along the stream corridor from Swatara Creek to Middletown Road for the Deer Run Stream Restoration portion.  Work is primarily occurring at the location shown in yellow below.  The majority of the grading and excavation work is completed along the location in red below.  Portions of the Deer Run pedestrian path will remain closed until project work ceases.  DTMA advises residents to remain off the path when it is noted as closed for safety reasons.

Construction work for the Bullfrog Valley Stream Restoration portion is essentially complete, with some final restoration and landscaping remaining.  Trail closure will be limited and of short duration until the majority of this work is completed in early May 2023.

Oakmont Stormwater Swale and Basin Project

Construction of improvements to the stormwater swale and stormwater management basins in the Oakmont community adjacent to Limerick Court and Lovell Court has progressed considerably, but has been paused for the time being until private property easements are obtained for a portion of work area northwest of Wood Road near the Eshenour Trail.    An existing storm sewer culvert that crosses Wood Road near its intersection with Limerick Court is to be replaced as part of this project.    DTMA will endeavor to replace this culvert in a manner that has the least impact to vehicular traffic on Wood Road, and will provide the community with the specific dates of this work once they are confirmed.

Shank Park Access Road Culvert Replacement

DTMA also intends to replace the culvert that conveys the Bullfrog Valley Stream beneath the access road to Shank Park.   The road will also be repaired, and a guide rail will be added.  The culvert will be replaced with a larger and sturdier culvert that will properly convey wet weather stream flows and will protect the road from washout or damage during such wet weather events.  Work on this project will be conducted by the same contractor that is performing the work for the Oakmont Stormwater Swale and Basin Project described above.  This project is anticipated to start in early May.  DTMA will coordinate with Derry Township on an approach to keep the access road open during construction if it appears that park activities at that time are such that access must remain uninterrupted.

As always, DTMA appreciates the Derry Township community’s cooperation and patience while we work to improve our waterways and storm sewer systems.
