Radon Awareness & Test Kits

Awareness

The Township of Derry encourages all residents to test their homes for radon. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive, invisible, tasteless, odorless gas that comes from uranium. Radon can seep into your home through cracks and spaces in the foundation. Exposure to indoor radon is a public health threat and can lead to lung cancer. Testing for radon is easy and inexpensive. A test kit is suspended in the lowest level of the home for three days. The kit is self-addressed, and postage paid. Complete your name and address, the start/end date and time of the test, remove the tape from the self-adhesive, and send to the lab. The test results will be mailed to you in approximately two weeks. The EPA recommends a level no higher than 4 picocuries per liter of air.

Test Kits

The township has test kits available for $ 7.00 + tax, and will provide informational packets when requested. Test kits are available at the Municipal Building, Recreation Center, Recycling Center and the Hershey Public Library.
